Stories From Jinja

A New Beginning

Children laughing together in Jinja, Uganda

Laughter is part of daily life at the home

For every child who arrives at our gate in Jinja, the first weeks are rarely easy. Many come to us having lost both parents to the AIDS epidemic, carrying grief and uncertainty far heavier than their small shoulders should ever have to bear. What we've learned, year after year, is that healing rarely starts with a big moment. It starts small — a warm meal at a set table, a bed that is truly theirs, a teacher who remembers their name.

Slowly, something shifts. A child who arrived silent begins to ask questions in class. Another who flinched at loud noises starts laughing during games in the courtyard. These are the new beginnings we get to witness almost every week here — not dramatic, but deeply real.

"We don't just give children a bed and a meal. We give them permission to be children again."

Our house parents and teachers work closely together, because we believe recovery from trauma isn't only about physical care — it's about consistency, routine, and being truly seen. Morning devotions, shared chores, schoolwork, and evening play all build the same message: you belong here, and you are safe.

None of this would be possible without the people who stand behind us — through prayer, volunteer visits, and financial support. Every new beginning we celebrate is really a beginning we share with you.
